I was told money can’t buy happiness, yet the happiest times of my childhood were spent standing at bakeries and gorging on goodies. Bangalore’s classic bakeries were the first and most trusted eat-out spots for common folk. These bakeries obviously pre-date their newer, air-conditioned counterparts. They are family run, bake on-site and provide sufficient goodies for Rs 100 or less, and serve Bangalore classics like dil pasand (Tuti- fruti and coconut stuffed pie), egg ‘pupps’ (a.k.a puffs), kara (spiced) biscuits, apple cake, and rusk among others. Some bakeries have stood for over a century, and this is a list of the unshakable crowd favourites in no particular order.
1 . B.B Bakery, Chickpet
The mother of all Iyengar bakeries, this is the oldest known bakery in Bangalore which opened way back in 1898. Originally a sweet shop, its founder learnt to bake from an English customer and went on to set the benchmark for waves of Iyengar bakers whose outlets dot the city today. They are egg-etarian and their tiny buns, bread, palya buns (veg stuffed) and Khara biscuits are the stuff of legend. If you’re ever in the city market area, this place is worth a visit.

2. Albert Bakery, Frazer Town
Almost every child who grew up in Bangalore East has been here. If anything this cantonment part of town knows its baked goods. Albert’s has served the vibrant and diverse community here since 1902. Their meat-stuffed buns, puffs and samosas and 20-rupee lava cakes have been enjoyed at many a house party. Open only between 3-9 pm everyday, the good stuff runs out by 7.30. Do not miss their hot-crossed buns during Christmas and the bheja fry samosa during Ramadan.

3. Sri Jayalakshmi Bakery, Subbaiah Circle
Arguably one of the best Egg Puffs in town which are always served hot. SJ Bakery’s chocolate rolls fly off the shelves and moms and dads swear by their Rusk cookies. The Dil Pasand is lavishly stuffed with dry fruits. Totally worth visiting if you’re in the vicinity of Lal Bagh.

4. S.G Iyengar Bakery, Cox Town
This bakery prepares something for everyone, from rusks for the health-conscious and infants, to butter biscuits and fried savouries for the more indulgent folk. ‘Bisi bread’ (hot bread) is also available, made of atta. They produce over 1,000 loaves of bread that sell out every day so they must be doing something right.

5. L.V Iyengar Bakery, New Thippasandra
The best cream buns in the city (no argument) – soft yet dense, full of cream and each one serves two. This is a relatively unknown spot, but each item deserves a special mention. Their toast (masala onion sandwich), egg puff and potato bun are a hit in this locality and they have lovely jam buns too.

6. Al – Bilal Bakery, Pillanna Garden
Their ‘khova naan’ (a closed pie stuffed with sweetened khoya) is best eaten as fresh out of their oven as possible. Every bite is followed by a burst of molten khoya. Orders for their range of naans are placed from all over the city. Their savoury snacks are on-point and can be enjoyed along with tea/coffee from the stall next door.

7. Koshy’s Automatic Bakery, Richmond Town
This Bakery is often confused for its Restaurant namesake but this place has been on the lips of Bangalore’s confectionary lovers since the 50’s and makes the merriest plum/rum cakes in town . I have been fortunate enough to even witness a fight over their last piece of brownie for the day between two patrons. This is the only place on our list with a seating area but the pricing remains as promised. Their chocolate ball makes me drool each time I think about it, and the coffee is great.

8. Thoms Bakery, Wheelers Road
The best was saved for the last! The bakery is so famous it has a bus stop named after it. But all the hype is an understatement considering the impeccable quality of their stuff. Every freshly made item here sells out by 5 pm. Their chicken mayonnaise roll is a delicious meal in itself for Rs 40. But you’d better go with an appetite for the widest range of pastries and the other sweet stuff in town. If you are into elongated French and Italian breads (at affordable prices), this is the place to go.
