A North Indian who has lived in South India for a decade altogether, I can now successfully vouch for the fact that I know the flavours of South Indian cuisine and the essence that forms its fabric.
Bon South is one of the restaurants that seems to know how to experiment with these flavours. While their roots are embedded deep into the Southern soil, in their outwardly appearance, this restaurant is meticulously contemporary, down to the intricate details.
South Indian food is distinguished with the generous use of numerous spices, all of which orchestrate a symphonic ballad of flavours. Was Bon South liberal with their use of spices? Oh yes! The hints of all the spices used was evident in most of the dishes that I tried.
I say most because of course, it’s almost unusual for a buffet to serve up all dishes that shine through in their own way. Bon South leaps into a close finish in terms of the variety and flavour. The archetypal buffet here would give you the chance to savour fish, prawns, squid, chicken, mutton and vegetarian delicacies. Eat. Eat. Repeat. Rest assured, your finest chance of sampling their most popular dishes has to be going in for the buffet.
While Bon South fared better than most restaurants, purely in terms of how appeasing it was for the palate, there were other things that caught my attention too.
Truth be told, I’d be blind to miss out on the open kitchen that stood right in the center of the restaurant. It was as intriguing as it was satisfying to see a bunch of toiling chefs spin around appams and dosas a couple of feet high in the air, back on the skillet, into the plate and onto your table. Like clockwork.
And The Best
Hardly am I ever so impressed with the service of a restaurant that it ends up becoming the highlight of the visit. Bon South has gone the extra mile in training their staff. It’s almost uncanny how all of their staff had a constant smile, a courteous demeanor and the enthusiasm to serve the guests well.
I’ve often been asked if service is pivotal to the entire dining experience and I can’t reiterate this enough but in most cases, it could turn tides in the favour of the restaurant. As for Bon South, they had me at their open kitchen; the amazing service being the added bonus!
