Nestled into the leafy family owned homes of Koramangala, DYU Art Cafe is run by our school friends from Kochi, who bring the simple pleasures of life under one roof, encouraging the scope of conversation to revolve around books, art and food.
The house mimics a traditional Kerala home with a wraparound balcony, filled with pleasant chatter that floats into the open courtyard, as you walk in.The staff and the owners are ever present, flitting by to address concerns and pull food and drinks out of the kitchen, one can tell the team is passionate and energetic, a quick chat leads to an enthusiastic tour and the work behind-the-scenes. The restaurant also serves an art gallery, featuring artists from around the world, giving us the experience of exploring new work every month. We linger at each painting as the delicious aroma of coffee washes over us from a stove top nearby.
Often mispronounced as an acronym, the word ‘Dyu’ translates to Sanskrit as brightness, a thing to enjoy as we sit up on the sun-kissed balcony and geeked out over a simple French press coffee, an iced honey milk and a slice of creamy Banoffee pie. The menu also offers an all-day breakfast, sandwiches, thin-crust pizzas, pasta, and an extensive list of drinks.
Having skipped lunch, we ordered a Chicken schnitzel, finely sliced chicken, crumb fried served with tartar sauce and crispy fries, a miss. Italiano, a delicious thin crust topped with spinach, olives, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, bamboo shoot and cheese.
Lamb stroganoff, chunky pieces of lamb cooked in a creamy sauce along with potatoes and carrots, served with herb rice.
We love the homemade breads, pizza crusts, cakes, pies and the generous portions sizes on the menu.
Overall, I am entrapped by the subtle goodness that runs through the very fabric of the cafe, a part of its laid-back charm.
We are told many lazy afternoons at the cafe turn into a languid affair: where you sit around drinking copious amounts of coffee, get a piece of cake or enjoy your own company.
