For confused desi millennials who identify with Jim and Pam as much as we do with Raj or Simran; Glocal Junction is a restobar that satiates our internationally Indian tastes with a delightfully diverse array of drinks and desserts. Its ambience and décor is every bit a work in progress as its target consumer base: channelling a warehouse-y look complete with spoons and forks disguised as shifters and wrenches. I was almost tempted to take apart my food and check out its circuitry, but my pizzas were far too tasty for me to worry about what was inside of them.
Glocal Junction’s biggest success lies in its ability to know its audience — the young, hip, 20-something Indian who still loves Bollywood despite its flaws. Why else did I get excited rather than offended when my food came in a doggie-dish/jailer’s plate?
Glocal Junction knows it’s the shit, and that’s why it tells you to wipe your hands on customised toilet paper rather than blah napkins. Once they’ve assaulted your expectations of classy dining, the folks who man their kitchen and hold their bar take you on a trip down memory lane with shots that taste like chuski, marshmallow-flavoured Irish whiskey, Vodka masquerading as kharbooza in a thailee and anda pav that reminds you of broke college days.
Everything solid and liquid on offer here screams multicultural. And you find yourself joining along as you cheer so damn loudly for them!
Don’t let its industrial look fool you; there is nothing run-of-the mill about this place. The service is in sharp contrast to its ambient atmosphere: the warm, friendly wait staff attends to your every whim and makes you feel every bit a local in this global establishment.
Give Glocal Junction a chance. Where else can you round off your meal with a filter kaapi dessert and paan-flavoured cheesecake?
