Head straight to the terrace, take the elevator to the third floor to enjoy a view overlooking the busy commissariat road, while you seat yourself on a high chair and enjoy the cosy elegance of a rooftop bar and restaurant in the heart of the city.
Flipping through the soft leather detailed menu, proves to be a good tackle and it is a good idea to let the eager waiter decide your fate. Our suggestion is to wholeheartedly commit to the mains or the meals ready, and prepare to be amused by curious plates of South Indian food. The cocktail list scores high with delicious twists of kokum, guntur chilli, banana, coconut juice and spices that pair well with almost everything on the menu. We got a round of the whiskey in Rasam, aka Patti’s Magic Rasam just out of curiosity.
Pandi spareribs, succulent pork spare ribs cooked in earthy corgi spices drizzled with honey, is inspired along with Urban Kosambari Salad, a light and refreshing salad with grated coconut, cucumber and pomegranate tossed with mixed moong sprouts, finished with a generous crumble of feta.
Meen Moilee Kappa, a beautifully poached brown grouper fillet, bathed in a delicate sauce on a bed of tapioca mash.
Highway Pandi Curry, succulent pieces of slow-cooked pork belly in Kodava spices, served on a a bed of upma, this dish similar to the appetiser, was a miss.
Jil Jil Jigarthanda, a favourite with the staff, this theatrical dessert drink works as a falooda accompanied with a rich, creamy cold rose milk.
What we loved?
The unusual pairings and combinations work to team up small plates and in-house cocktails. A brain fry with a beer or mini dosas filled with pulled pork or cheesy tapioca fries with Patti’s Magic Rasam.
Overall, The Permit Room is a refreshing introduction to all things southern, from pretty plates of food to a tongue-in-cheek interpretation of South Indian fare.
