A lot of ingredients go into the making of a great foodie movie. For starters, great cooking must be one of the central themes, though not necessarily the main one. It must have some talented cooks/chefs as key characters, churning out gorgeous looking dishes throughout the movie. And it must also have an interesting and inspiring tale at the heart of it all. Throw in some romance, suspense and laughs and voilà, you have a lip-smacking delight of a movie! Here are few both in Hindi and English:
Director Jon Favreau leads the cast in this light-hearted tale about a talented chef dealing with a mid-life crisis, while bonding with his adorable son on a road trip. There is a lot of love for good food in this movie, and some truly delicious looking Cuban sandwiches and barbecue roasts too. The way the father teaches his son the art of being a chef makes for some special moments. The story about the jaded chef rediscovering his passion for cooking and how he eventually faces up to his greatest critic is quite inspiring.
Though it is a run-of-the-mill Bollywood romance at heart, this Hindi flick deserves a place on this list just for the way it showcases Lucknowi cuisine. The heroine played by Parineeti Chopra is a dedicated carnivore, and the way Aditya Kapur’s Lucknowi restaurateur tries to woo her with authentic Lucknow non-veg dishes is simply a treat to watch. You will end up with a craving for some Biryani, Kebab and Phirni after watching this movie, for sure!
This is a truly special movie about the way the lives of people entwine in random. And it also showcases a special culinary tradition unique to Mumbai, the world-renowned dabbawala system. A mistaken delivery of a lunch-box kindles an unlikely friendship between a young housewife and an older office worker. The movie is all about how their ‘tiffin-pal’ relationship evolves, while showing some delicious home-cooked food in the process.
If we had to involve an animation foodie flick, this is the only logical choice. And no, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” does not make the grade! Ratatouille is a true labour of love for fine cooking, and it goes about its story in an adorable way. The animation is top notch, and the dishes and food look delectable. And yes, the movie does have an important message: “Anybody can cook!”
And for dessert, you have to have this romantic fantasy involving Juliette Binoche, lots of dark chocolate and a dreamy-looking Johnny Depp as a gypsy. One of the highlights of the movie is the scene where the characters enjoy a whole meal involving dishes infused with chocolate. The expressions on their face as they savour it reminds us of the power of good food. If you love chocolate, this is the Johnny Depp movie you simply need to watch, even ahead of the highly whimsical “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”!
