Quick-fry chicken sausages are among the oldest convenience food items in the world. When there’s nothing to cook and zilch desire to toil in the kitchen, a handy packet of chicken sausages always comes to the rescue. And it isn’t just you and me, even Homer mentioned a type of sausage in ‘The Odyssey’ way back in the 8th Century! And yet, over time, I’ve grown tired of the same ol’ fried sausage routine And since boredom is the mother of innovation, here are 5 things you can do with yummy chicken sausages to make them even scrummier!
Chicken Sausage Chilli Fry
Sauté some chopped onions, peppers and capsicum in a pan. Add chopped green chillies, a teaspoon each of soy sauce and red chilli sauce, and mix well. Toss in some sliced chicken sausages, top off with as much Schezwan chutney as you like, and dig in!
Frittata & Minis
Eggs are my best friends and an ever-reliable back-up option. Instead of eating the same ol’ omelette, try a frittata. Sounds fancy, but it is awfully easy to make. Make the sausage chilli fry as mentioned above (add some sliced mushrooms if you like). Beat a few eggs in a bowl and pour it all over the sausages. Don’t stir the eggs in, just let them set, cover and cook until firm. Voila, a wholesome meal is ready!
Wok Veggie-Sausage Sauté
Chicken sausages are very easy to make and go well with pretty much anything. Toss your favourite cut vegetables in a wok, add sliced sausages, and season with some dried herbs (or the extra pizza seasoning packet that was left unused from the last time you ordered!) Enjoy this as a stir fry or as a topper on your plate of rice.
Chicken Sausage Pasta
This one couldn’t be simpler! Sausages make the pasta moist and tasty enough to not need any additional sauce. Cook the pasta as the label directs. In a pan, cook the sausages till brown, add some chopped onions and mushrooms, stir till cooked. Once done, toss in the pasta and season with salt, pepper, herbs, and some cheese.
Chicken Sausage-Apple Salad
I know some people don’t like mixing sweet and savoury, but trust me, this one packs a very happy surprise. Chop the sausages, stir fry and set aside. Toss some sliced tart Granny Smith apples (you could also try this with strawberries), lettuce or other salad greens, onions, and some cheese in a bowl. Add the sausages. Mix a batch of balsamic vinaigrette with virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar in a 3:1 ratio. Drizzle the vinaigrette over your salad mix, and season with salt and pepper. The sweetness of the apples, the bite of the vinaigrette, and the hearty taste of chicken sausages make for a winning mix.
