If the conversation is about the best food the City of Dreams has to offer, seafood would surely make it to the very top of the list. After all, being the largest peninsula in the world has its advantages. And when the freshest of fish meets the most creative chefs, the results are nothing short of inspired. If you have a hankering for delectable crabs, succulent prawns, and rawa fry good enough to make you weep, here are some marvels that would make even the most hard-nosed Koli proud:
5. Fish Masala Thali at Highway Gomantak, Bandra East
Craving authentic seafood dishes made in the simplest, most traditional styles? Head to Highway Gomantak in Bandra East. Far from a newcomer in the list of Mumbai seafood speciality restaurants, Highway Gomantak has been serving seafood lovers for over 20 years. They offer a number of seafood thalis – Tisrya/Shellfish Masala, kurlya/Crab masala, Kolambi Sukke/Dried Shrimp, and the ever-popular Pomfret Curry Thali. If you do not have the appetite to polish off a whole thali, order the Bombil fry or the Pomfret fry . It is a taste of homely heaven.
4. Meen Manga Curry at The Konkan Café, Cuffe Parade
Based out of the Taj President – Vivanta, Konkan Café might be a tad expensive but its long list of stunning seafood makes up for it. I recommend the Meen Manga Curry or fish in a coconut and raw mango gravy. I guarantee you’ll be licking your fingers at the end of the meal.
3. Crab Lollipop at Chaitanya, Dadar
If authentic Malvani, super-spicy seafood is your kryptonite, Surekha Walke’s Chaitanya at Shivaji Park is your place. This tiny restaurant specialises in home-style cooking. The Crab Lollipop is a seafood lover’s dream, and if you like your crustaceans like mum makes them, you will not be disappointed.
2. Surmai Fish Tikka/Malabar Machchi Tikka at Mahesh Lunch Home, Fort
The menu of this ever-popular seafood haven reads like a dream. A stop at Mahesh Lunch Home is almost a rite of passage for everyone who comes to Mumbai. They have five locations across the city to make dining here easy for you. The Surmai Tikka and Malabar Machchi Tikka (I recommend the rawas) are to die for.
1.Tandoori Crab/Clams Koshimbir at Gajalee, Vile Parle East
If you enjoy Mumbai’s seafood gems, there is no way you haven’t heard of Gajalee. Though there are several other branches, the one at Vile Parle is the real McCoy. Both the Tandoori Crab and the Clam Koshimbir are incredible. The crabs are cooked to perfection and served with a side of sliced onions. Get a taste and you will know why Gajalee has been ranked the best seafood restaurant in all of Mumbai repeatedly.
