Being a writer, I realize the importance of not having to stare at the confines of a cubicle for inspiration. The parents keep telling me about how we’re a spoiled generation of people, who use words like passion and inspiration as excuses. They wonder about the evolution of this new culture wherein a luxury like a café is a requisite, according to us, for work to get done; while they used to balance two jobs to run the house and walk to work. It does help people who don’t have an office or operate purely on freelance; so I’ll admit, I do feel a bit vain using it. But with such cool hangouts doubling up as work spaces and enticing me away from the insipid office tube lights, can I really be blamed?
Woodside Inn, Colaba
This cozy, Irish tavern-like place turns to a trendy bar at night. But during the day and before 5 pm on weekends, it’s a respite from the city’s chaos, with just the right amount of sunlight streaming in, unlimited access to WiFi and some fantastic food (and drinks) for thought. A cheerful mood throughout work is ensured by their mellow playlist.
Things To Try: Everything here! And definitely reward yourself with one of their cocktails, every time you achieve targets.
Social Offline, Todi Mill
What began as a social workspace for those who can’t afford offices is now one of the most happening pubs in South Mumbai. That being said, Todi Mill Social has still managed to hang on to the vision it was built with. Here, you could rent a desk and get access to basic office facilities like a conference room, printer, and unlimited WiFi. The unique feel of an old Mumbai mill office being turned into a brainstorming den is meant to make you feel creative.
Things To Try: The Social brunch is for breakfast meetings with important clients. The executive lunch could be for meetings within work. The munchies, however? Those are just for you because a genius like you could sweep clients off their feet with a plate of Tikka Tacos or Anda Seekh Paratha by your side. The Paos and Baos are quite encouraging too. The Burgers are for celebrating accomplishments.
The Taj Mahal Tea House, Bandra Reclamation
Well, if you absolutely can’t bring yourself to get any work done at home, try working in another home – this home, to be more specific. What could make you more productive than being in a quaint bungalow with vintage furniture, old world charm, free WiFi and several charging outlets across the expansive colonially furnished, blue-and-white-walled space? Having some of the really choicest teas in that bungalow, of course! At the end of the day, you could slip into something more comfortable – like one of the books from their impressive bookshelf.
Things To Try: The exotic Idli Burgers and the delicious Chai Panna Cotta would keep you as happily working as a good Christmas elf.
The Bagel Shop, Bandra West
Tucked away into one of the quiet inner streets of Carter Road, this stolen piece of Goa is designed to get those creative juices flowing. Don’t believe me? Well, believe the colourful couches you will sink into, believe the unlimited WiFi, believe the incredible amount of quiet that this stealthy (and oh so cozy!) place has managed to hoard in Mumbai and definitely believe the Bagels and Sandwiches that don’t want hunger or cravings to get in the way of you giving maximum output.
Things To Try: Any of the Bagels, The Cuban Sandwiches and The Hotpots. These are especially crafted to induce swoons but the rest of the menu is pretty exceptional too.
Bistro 1, Andheri West
This very European Café, with its eccentric mix of random put together European elements and the most romantic lighting ever, will make you feel like you’re on a date with your work. If you’re one of those people following their passion then the place will rekindle the flame that got lost somewhere in trying to submit deliverables and make it to payday. Meanwhile, if you’re one of the people doing a job to pay the bills, hey, you can get to know your work like never before and perhaps even fall in love with what you do.
Things To Try: Thai Iced Coffee, Oriental Spiced Green Tea, Salads, Sandwiches and if you’re working late, then gift yourself a well-earned Spaghetti and Meatballs.
