The term ‘Monday blues’ has put a dent in the way we perceive the colour. However, it’s a scientifically established positive hue—it is a serene shade that’s calming, soothing and relaxing. And for these very reasons, the use of blue in Neel Indian Kitchen & Bar is not only apt but also the clincher for the restaurant’s success.
While Neel’s first outlet in Mahalaxmi has an all-white appeal, the Powai outpost incorporates the colour in its very details. Blue Spanish tiles on the floor lend an old-world homely look and the blue table napkins (contrasting with mustard-hued ones) add a comforting feel. However, there’s more to Neel’s appearance that adds to its charm. As I sip on one after another cold-pressed fresh fruit juice, I realise that it comes from the finesse showcased in the kitchen, which has everyone yearning for more. The familiarity of Indian cuisine is a huge draw, no doubt, but here, there’s a little something that adds an X factor.
The expansive menu covers the whole range of vegetables, meats and seafood prepared in a variety of North Indian cooking methods.
Be sure to order the Samosa Kadhi, a Neel speciality, first. This portion of crisp Punjabi samosas served with a sour Punjabi kadhi with toppings done Khow Suey-style is so popular and so tasty, that it sells out quite fast.
Another Neel speciality, the Nadru Ke Shammi (minced lotus stem kebabs) is yet another delicious must-try vegetarian treat. The Sarson Wali Gobi delivers a delectable mustard kick. And then there’s the ever-favourite Galouwti kebabs, the traditional ‘seven times minced’ goat meat created using a closely guarded blend of 65 spices. Whether it’s your first or fortieth meal there, opt for dishes that are highlighted as ‘Neel specialities’ and you’ll experience a new kind of blue. The kind we associate with heavens above.
