If there’s one leitmotif you wouldn’t imagine in a resto-bar with an all-industrial modern design, it would be the Devanagari alphabet ‘क’. Yet, it’s everywhere at Glocal Junction—in the branding (it’s actually spelled Gloकal), on the glasses that serve up delicious cocktails, on the striking red-and-white doggy bags and even divided on the glass double doors as you enter the spacious, double-ceilinged interiors.
The contrast of the vernacular reference to this contemporary place isn’t limited to the alphabet alone though. Its influences are seen throughout the eatery—their tableware and silverware used to serve modern fusion fare, is akin to old Indian iron vessels that were common generations ago; the charming metal boards that indicate the restrooms in Devanagari script and the heavy iron doors that would take a heavy-lifter to push open lead to (thankfully) modern washlets; and no surprises for guessing that the influence is seen on the menu too with a smattering of India-inspired global dishes.
Local favourites such as Kheema Pav and Adana Kebab share space with east-meets-west varieties of The Chaat, Tandoori Chicken Risotto and Biryani Risotto. Plus, there are also nachos, pizzas and continental appetisers on offer. If that’s not enough of a contrast, then imagine washing down this fare with a sparkling (Sparkling, Strawberry and Cachaca is delicious!) or classic cocktail. Yet another way both worlds collide is in the dessert offering—consider the Masala Chai Panacotta, Kalkata Pan Cheesecake and Baked Filter Kafi.
In a suburb where watering holes remain favourites for too little a time, Glocal Junction seems to be holding its own.
After all, this resto-bar is a serious contrast when you look at other places in Andheri. Because how many can boast high ceilings, industrial styled decor with booths and bar chairs aplenty, and/or additional seating arrangements on the mezzanine and outdoor sections? So, now you see why I started off with क for contrasts, क for cool.
