Few things are as pleasurable as hot, steaming food on chilly days. Whether you’re on a winter vacation or at home, imagine holding a hot cuppa or better still, a steaming portion of the Northeastern-favourite food, momos. Don’t worry about making them, there are a number of places to go out and get a delicious portion. Leave the steaming basket behind.
If there’s one place that you cannot skip, when it comes to this food is Yauatcha, the Michelin-starred London restaurant’s outpost in Mumbai. It is after all a dim sum house! Head to BKC for the spectacular Truffle Edamame Dumplings, which, at first contact, seem to melt against your palate before they deliver the irresistible kick of truffle oil. If going to BKC seems like a trek, then get this dumpling at Hakkasan, the other Michelin-starred restaurant from London. And while you’re there, be brazen and order the Hakka Fried Dim Sum Platter. Thank us later. For another fancy version, turn to The Table. This Colaba-based restaurant serves up a memorable Shrimp Dumpling Portion with an exotic and spicy ginger broth. The star element is the scallion oil, which inexplicably makes the dish taste better.
When it comes to pocket-friendly finds, there are loads in the city. But the one at Busago is my favourite. For more than three reasons—the restaurant offers authentic Tibetan momos; the dough is prepared on a daily basis, so it doesn’t get chewy; and the momos are steamed on order, so it takes 15 minutes but it’s worth it. You can even decide on your choice of protein. Along with it, you get a choice of sauces, including the original green chilli sauce. Meanwhile, at Mamagoto, the high-on-flavour street style spicy dumplings are a modern spin on the traditional dumplings with street-style sambal sauce and red chilli oil that’ll make you never want to leave. If you like your shrimp, then try their Jungle Dumplings.
No piece on momos is complete without the mention of the humble New Sernyaa in Oshiwara, perhaps the most authentic Tibetan momos in town. Savour the pan-fried version that are prepared using the original recipe handed down to its Tibetan-origin owners.
