Sequel, in Bandra, opened its doors on a Saturday. And within a few hours, this small bistro is packed to the gills. And here’s why.
The menu is 100% gluten-free and also provides other information depending on your dietary needs or restrictions – vegan, dairy-free, nut-free, etc. Whether you’re gluten-intolerant or just trying to eat (and live) better, Sequel has a ton of options for you.
We started with the drinks. First up, we got the very instructional Eat your Greens. Made with tender kale, chocolate mint, pineapple and green apple, this cold-pressed juice was surprisingly delicious. The pineapple and green apple masked the taste of kale – definitely an acquired taste. We also tried their homemade Cashew Nut Milk and their Acai Berry Jar with organic chia seeds. The first was definitely an exotic milk with its stellar company of banana and raspberries, while the Acai Berry smoothie was thick, delicious and almost a meal by itself.
From the lunch menu, after much deliberation and the waiter’s input, we decided on a salad and three mains. The Green Goddess Salad is a beautiful Instagram-worthy salad with tender kale (yes, again), zucchini, pomegranate, avocados, cherry tomatoes and rosemary-almond croutons. We also tried The Big Heist that had a beautiful poached egg on a slice of homemade organic whole grain oat flour, buckwheat and gluten-free bread. We would have happily had a lot more of those roasted veggies too.
Our two favourites of the day would have to be Into The Wild – with wild black rice, walnuts and cranberries and Italian Heritage – zucchini noodles in pesto sauce. It’s tough to go wrong with a hearty bowl of rice and pretend-pasta.
Before we could pick our dessert, founder Vanika Choudhary came over to our table to give us a preview of the breakfast menu. Vanika started Sequel after she quit her corporate job and aims to make healthy food, exciting. Judging by the happy, and full-to-bursting bistro, she won’t have to try too hard. And given that Sequel is all set to open its terrace doors in a few weeks, you should probably hurry up and reserve a spot pronto!
We were already starting to feel pretty full but we couldn’t leave without sampling at least one dessert. And so, the Chocolate Lust it was. The vegan, soy-free chocolate cookie with a dense raspberry centre is quite possibly the healthiest dessert I’ve had. But then again, chocolate is always a fitting end to most meals, even the healthy ones. Actually, especially the healthy ones.
