I’m immediately sceptical of any restaurant that limits its menu to ‘healthy’ offerings because of my belief that happiness is found in calorie laden plates of food. When I hear of Kitchen Garden’s salad and sandwich menu, I agree to visit it against all better judgement. It’s amongst Mumbai’s recent crop of restaurants that pander to that crowd of people who look like their entire schedule comprises pilates and aerobics classes.
We arrive a little too early for lunch and sip on a Macchiato and the Feel Good smoothie while we wait for the lunch menu to be served. One sip of the smoothie with its mix of berries, banana and chia seeds and I already feel ready to hop aboard the healthy train. The macchiato gives me the perfect afternoon caffeine boost while we take in the interiors. The space is tiny but well designed to make it appear spacious and there are nice touches like the tiny potted plants that act as table pieces. We finally get around to ordering lunch and I notice that they offer the option to make your own salads.
Picking from their sheer number of options (kale, quinoa, ricotta cheese-the list is endless) seems like an uphill climb and I settle on the Soba Salad comes with Japanese noodles and the Classic Sandwich.
With its healthy portion of prawns and the tangy miso and ginger dressing-the Soba is a light and perfect for all the seafood enthusiasts. I find myself feeling surprisingly full after plowing through it and I wonder if I’ve been missing out on this salad health craze the whole time. I still push myself to try the sandwich with its Spanish Ham and generous helping of cheddar cheese. The mix of ham, cheese and mustard is perfect for a Sunday brunch or even for a quiet, beach picnic.
At the end of our lunch, I’m comfortably full and slowly learning that healthy food could mean a delicious yet guilt free dining experience. Kitchen Garden’s use of organic, local products has me impressed and it’s safe to say that I’ll be visiting again for lazy Sunday brunches.
