We’re all familiar with the age-old nursery rhyme about Old MacDonald and his bountiful farm. But what you may not expect to find in modern times is to draw a thematic similarity to it—which is what happened on a recent visit to The Barking Deer Brewpub in Mumbai.
Owner Gregory Kroitzsh found a spot
The first words of the 1917 tune help write the simplest of opening lines. Bostoner Gregory Kroitzsh, who spent three years running pillar to post, became the owner of the city’s first ever brewery in 2013. Along with Benjamin Johnson, a brew master from Alaska, he achieved, in his words, “the impossible” in Mumbai.
And at this hotspot, the duo brewed some beer
The duo presents a variety of in-house brews—most of them light, in colour and on the palate. The Flying Pig Belgian Wit is brewed in traditional Belgian style, while the Bombay Blonde Ale is a golden-ish pilsner malt. My favourite: the unique chilli-flavoured beer, which is light as air and has a spicy kick that hits all the right notes. If you’re more of a straight-from-the-bottle kind, then the long list of imported beer will spoil you for choice.
With a beer dish here, and a beer dish there
Once you’re past the extensive beer menu, the first two pages present a variety of food made using beer. A beetroot risotto infused with beer instead of wine, Chicken and Corn Ravioli with a beer-y yet creamy sauce, and the Beer Batter Basa are definitely worth a big bite. If you’re out for a workday lunch, you’re best off with savouries from the non-beer menu—the baked nachos, grilled chicken sliders or the meaty Carnivore platter.
Here a beer, there a beer, everywhere beer-beer
I’d strongly recommend taking a “swig” at the beer tasters, where the waiting staff presents a mix of any four beers (of your choice) for a taste but the glasses hold enough to make a small drink out of it. Definitely worth getting a beer belly for!
