I have been charmed by stories of New York too often. Each person ends up advocating a unique attribute—it’s so green, so great for shopping, a melting pot of cultures, lovely in autumn and winter, etc. However, if there’s one thing they all have to say, it is: “you’ll never eat a single cuisine twice”. That’s the beauty of New York City. But, what do you do, if you want a gastronomical experience à la New Yorkers? You go to It Happened in New York!
“When the pizza reached New York, locals gave it their own spin and presented New York-style pizzas. When the Greek-origin cheesecake went to New York, we got New York-style cheesecake. You see, each time a cuisine made it to The Big Apple, it was given a new avatar that became successful and popular around the world,” says first-time restaurateur Manashwi Gupta, who along with his wife, Aastha, opened the doors to It Happened in New York, right here in Bandra Reclamation. “We realised that New York has a culinary identity of its own and wanted to bring it here,” adds Aastha.
Just a few days old, as you walk through the doors of this three-storeyed restaurant and across the chic interiors, you instantly interact with the ink blue walls and the decorative carpets that are reminiscent of New York lofts. Big, artsy pendant lamps lend a warm glow to the American diner-styled classic red couches, metallic seaters and community tables.
As large as the physical space is, so is the menu. Conceptualised by a chef whose last stint was at a three Michelin-star restaurant, and inspired by New York’s contemporary dining scene, the menu offers bar nibbles, small plates, clean plates (yay to healthy food), large plates and our favourite: desserts.
The in-house mixologist is nothing short of a magician, who combines simple ingredients and converts them into delectable drinks. IMHO, the NY Fashioned here is the best Old Fashioned you’ll have in the city. If you like them smaller, opt for Satan’s Circus Punch—it comes in a cup and is a delightful mix of vodka, berry-based mixes, apple juice and chamomile tea. It’s as unique in taste as it sounds.
There’s so much food on offer—from quirky nachos and tacos that feature a whole jalapeño to deep-fried chicken spwings, grilled salmon and New York bhelpuri—there’s so much to try out. My warning: Save yourself for the desserts. The New York cheesecake is as good as ever. The highlight is the matcha crepe cake, whose sweetness is tempered by the tangy orange-y zing, leaving you with a clean palate and a wish to visit again.
Perhaps, for the first time in our lives, we don’t need to pack our bags for a “taste”—quite literally—of New York.
