Since the fried sausage routine can be a drag. Check out these 5 cool Mumbai eateries that do delicious sausage dishes with a twist:
5. The Bagel Shop
There are plenty of quirky things I love about The Bagel Shop at Bandra. Over a decade old, this place is a refuge for old timers who sink into the cane furniture, sipping coffee, looking out at Pali Hill and connecting to the world from their corner table. The first place in Bandra (and possibly Mumbai) to offer free Wi-Fi to customers, The Bagel Shop is a haunt for new-age entrepreneurs who need only caffeine, Wi-Fi, and confidence to succeed. TBS is where Bandra’s Kably and Amsterdam’s Matan Schabracq come together to give their customers eclectic bagels and crisp salads.
Sausage stars: Grilled Sausages Bagel (chicken or pork) packed with tomatoes, cheese, mayo, and lettuce. The Anton, which has dollops of cream cheese, and Goa sausages with tomato and lettuce.
4. Desi Deli
A fairly recent launch, Desi Deli has a couple of delectable sausage options on offer. What sets them apart is that their sausages are not the run-of-the-mill processed ones you buy at the local cold storage. They are sourced from a sausage maker who once worked for the popular Bangalore Ham Shop. Plus, the recipe used is Desi Deli’s own brainchild.
Sausage stars: The Desi Chicago Dog with sausages, fried chilli, crackles, and pickled veggies, and The Goan Desi Dog made with spicy Goan sausages, onions, peppers, and applesauce!
3. Artisan – Sofitel
Sausages were first invented before 500 BC, way before refrigerators were invented. So how did our ancestors work around the storage conundrum? Sausages are a cured food item, salted to preserve the meat without refrigeration. In fact, even the word ‘sausage’ comes from the Latin ‘salsus’ which means ‘salted’. Artisan at BKC uses this clever invention and turns it into pure art.
Sausage stars: The Sausage Platter served with German potato salad and sauerkraut and ask for assorted sausages like the Chicken Thuringer, Pork Andouillette, and very-Indian Chicken Tikka Sausage.
2. New Martin Hotel
If you’re craving Goan seas and sausages, New Martin Hotel can give you one out of two. This is a no-frills lunch home that caters to the masses, and serves food that will make you cry with joy. New Martin Hotel at Colaba is a well-known eatery for every non-vegetarian Goan fiesta for your palate—from sorpotel to vindaloo. Be warned that the ambience is non-existent and the place shuts shop by 9.30pm.
Sausage stars: The Sausage Fry, a part of their permanent menu, though there are plenty of daily specials for you to choose from. And the Sausage and Egg Chips served for breakfast hits all the right notes.
While you will find plenty of restaurants that offer fine dining options and great ambience, IMBISS is the Holy Grail of sausages. Their menu is pretty much made up of sausages creatively decked with different toppings. It is a tiny joint, but your sausage trail in Mumbai is incomplete without it.
Sausage stars: Pork Bratwurst stuffed with bacon, Duck Sausage with slaw and mustard, Lamb and Mint Sausage. If you can’t make up your mind, get the Signature Sausage Platter, which has an assortment of house-speciality chicken and pork combinations.
