Love momos? You’re going to be loving a lot more of Tibetan food at this tiny new joint in Shastri Nagar Lane, Andheri West.
Where You From, You Sexy Thing?
The original outlet is based in Kolkata and the people there swear by its yumminess. No really, people out there tell their bae ‘You’re the best thing to have happened to me since the momos and thupka of The Darjeeling.’ Momo-promise (that can be taken as seriously as mother-promise, when I’m saying it)!
What Do I Eat There?
Close your eyes and start with the momos – the Kothay momos, to be more precise. Steamed on one side and pan fried on the other, they’re the new crush of your taste buds. The sauce is delicious enough to be licked clean once you’re done with the momos.
Furthermore, they have very authentic Tibetan dishes like Shapta and Shaphalays to choose from but I went with the warm, comforting Kawri – a thick soup with vegetables, handmade macaroni and your choice of meat.
Don’t try to duck out on trying the various duck dishes – that would be a big mistake. Big. Huge!
Tender, juicy and flavourful to the core, the duck dishes here are mouth-watering enough to make you salivate the next time you’re looking at Donald, Daisy or Daffy too. The Darjeeling Spicy Fish and the Crispy Konjee Chicken are yumminess personified and if, after that, you still have space to breathe, you can go for some of their interesting main course options like Gravy Noodle or Cantonese Chowmein. I suggest going back repeatedly and trying everything on the menu.
What Do I Drink There?
Currently, their only options are Fresh Lime Soda, Masala Cola and Aerated Drinks, but they do have some relaxing green teas kept there for selling and they’re gracious enough to brew you a cup. I got to try the Hibiscus one at the end of a long, tiring day, and it successfully made me forget the long, tiring day.
Le Quirky Bit
It’s a small, intimate café with soft lighting on the indoors and huge Tibetan prayer flags hanging off the ceiling on the outdoors. The owners are warm, friendly people who always have a great playlist (a new one each time you visit) ready to go with your dinner. They look after you pretty well.
Every single time I visit, I notice a lot of other people coming back too. It quickly becomes a favourite haunt for those who eat there once. You can take your own time becoming one of us regulars there. Meanwhile, I’m going to be going back tonight for some authentic Bhutanese Ema Dasi and Kewa Dasi. What are those? I don’t know but I’m sure whatever they are, at The Darjeeling, they will be delicious.
