These joints, feeding the night shift people, the party animals, the stoners and other nocturnal beings, make it easy to be in the city that never sleeps.
The Light Of Asia, Fort
The Light Of Asia Restaurant in Fort is one of the very few surviving witnesses in the city, of when it was Bombay. In those times, Irani cafes used to grace the city at regular intervals and be open 24 hours. I remember being disappointed for days when the one outside Andheri station shut down about half a decade ago, to be replaced by a McDonald’s. This is one of the last remaining ones.
What To Try: Their perfectly milky chai, comforting Paya, very welcoming Keema, bun maska and butter chicken among many other humble yet utterly delicious preparations. Vegetarians must try the Cheese Kadai –mixed vegetable topped with cheese.
Open: 24 Hours
How Much: INR 650 for two people
Adarsh Annapoorna, Kalbadevi
Adarsh Annapoorna Restaurant is situated deep within one of the lanes of Kalbadevi. The owner of the place saw people take refuge in the Taj and eat there, during the 1992 riots, and was inspired enough to set this place up. The lack of parking space and the somewhat dingy interiors usually fool people into giving this place and its delectable vegetarian fare a miss. The Chinese, Punjabi and Rajasthani dishes here would keep your stomach warm in the wee hours of the night.
What To Try: Makke Ki Roti, Sarson Ka Saag, Paneer Makhanwala with Ghee Phulkas and Papad Churi, Sev Tamatar Ki Sabzi
Open: Till 4:30am
How Much: INR 650 for two people
Sigdi , Bandra West
Sigdi in Bandra West is the place that most locals will direct you to when you ask around for the best place for a midnight snack. It’s a three-storied restaurant with minimal decor but in those late hours, the ambience behind shut doors doesn’t matter before the food awaiting you behind open doors. It is inviting enough to make you forget about anything else even during the day.
What To Try: Absolutely any popular Chinese soup and their hot, yummy rolls that lure people form a mile away. Certainly do try the Reshmi Chicken, Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka rolls.
Open: Till 6 am for takeaways but till 1 am otherwise.
How Much: INR 500 for two people
Mogal Sarai, Bandra West
Mogal Sarai near Bandra station looks deceptively avoidable on the outside. Inside, it’s a really nice place to sit with friends and eat. The place is a little bit easier to resist at 7 pm when it opens and people are rushing to catch a train. When the city quiets down and the aromas wafting from this place take over? Not so much then.
What To Try: Tandoori chicken, all the chicken kebabs, Murg Lasooni Tikka Roll, Chicken Chilly Roll and Butter Chicken.
Open: From 7 pm to 5 am, but you can catch them serving food till 7 am too quite a lot of times.
How Much: INR 800 for two people
Apna Dhaba, Chakala
Apna Dhaba at Chakala makes up in plenty for the lack of late night joints in that area. The interiors are that of an authentic dhaba on one side and good for a regular plush restaurant on the other. Along with mouth-watering North Indian and Chinese fare, they also serve alcohol till the wee hours.
What To Try: Murgh Achari Kebab, Murgh Kalmi Kebab, Mutton Ghee Roast, Kheeme Ki Khichdi and their rich chicken gravies with their Tandoori rotis and naans glistening with butter.
Open: Till 6 am
How Much: INR 1000 for two people
