Winter is coming and so are these cocktails that will keep you warm when you snuggle with them.
What: Irish Coffee @ The English Department Bar & Diner
Why: Few things say December like a luxurious cup of Irish whiskey with coffee, sugar and whipped cream. Going to this very English bar (possibly in a fur coat) and sipping away at this coffee is such a lovely way of celebrating the arrival of whatever little cold breeze we Mumbaikars get, this time of the year.
What: Mulled Wine With Cranberries @ Lighthouse Café
Why: This drink originated in the 2nd century when the Greeks, who hated wasting any wine left on the table (good people, I tell you!), started heating up their wine with spices in it. The Romans, then, picked up the recipe, added honey to it and used it protect themselves against the cold of winter. Mulled wine really took off in medieval Europe, became something of a winter standard all over the world, found place in Christmas and Halloween celebrations, in literature and TV for centuries afterwards and is prepared with raspberry vodka, hot cranberry juice, white wine and dried cranberries at this lovely café.
What: Grandmama’s Spiced Toddy @ Grandmama’s Café
Why: Winter in Mumbai may not bring snow but it sure does bring the viral infections. At such times, always return to your grandmama and her medicinal potions… or to her café in Juhu or Lower Parel. This one’s more Nonna than Nani but her Hot Toddy brewed caringly with brandy, honey, warm water, spices and love works on the big kids as sick as you anywhere in the world.
What: Masala Tea-Cheers @ The Bombay Canteen
Why: In a city with as much moxie as Mumbai, it comes as no surprise that people like their tea as ‘kadak’ as they themselves are. This solid concoction with Teachers, triple sec, masala tea syrup, mint, lime and egg white is ‘kadak’ enough to keep you warm against the crispness we still get to enjoy in the air, this time of the year.
What: Camp Fire @ Hoppipola
Why: We all grew up on camping stories, either our own or Enid Blyton’s. Those of us who only heard of how it was done everywhere else have been dreaming of those tents, those bonfires, the S’mores and the songs. Now, you could sing ‘Ants Go Marching’, ‘Gopher Guts’ or the slightly more adult ‘Assumption Song’. But this wonder of all cocktail wonders, wherein you roast marshmallows, dunk them in Baileys and let them bring you joy, will have everyone singing ‘If you’re Hoppi and you know it, clap your hands’.
What: Magic Cacao @ Lighthouse Café
Why: Hot chocolate or ‘hot cocoa’, as it’s come to be known in children’s literature, is one of the most popular winter drinks or Christmas drinks. Then again, why should kids have all the fun? This A-rated philtre of cacao, candy, chocolate chips, chocolate liquer and hot milk is what you get for having been a good person all year round. Clink your mug with Santa, on that one!
What: The High Tea @ The Bombay Canteen
Why: Because winter is a season meant for snuggling with loved ones, sharing a lot of comforting brews and making memories that warm your heart in every season. This bowl of 1500 ml of a tea punch which consists of spiced rum, almond syrup, white chocolate syup, apple cinnamon tea, orange juice and pineapple juice is just as quirky as your crazy family, friends or significant other. It’s perfect for hibernation mode.
