In an inspired attempt to get her elder daughter to eat healthy food, Malaysian food artist Samantha Lee started creating stunning edible art inspired by Disney characters and made of colourful, healthy ingredients. This was way back in 2008 when food still looked like food and not like something that belonged in a vintage frame hanging in a museum.
Lee’s talent in transforming ordinary ingredients like onigiri, carrots, broccoli and strawberries into extraordinary works of playful art forever changed the way mums and kids world over looked at lunch boxes. Or any food, for that matter. Thanks, Instagram.
With more than 736,000 followers on the photo-sharing app, it looks like we are not the only ones loving her awesome home-cooked kids’ meals.
While some of her meals feature Disney favourites, others are original fairytales in the making. Seriously, kid or not, who wouldn’t want a bite of that healthy, adorable food art?
Of course, now, Lee is channelling her particular brand of genius in her many – and wildly successful might we add – collaborations with major brands like DBS, Turkish Airlines, Barilla, to name a few.
If you are looking for a little inspiration to get your kids (or yourself) to put down that pizza and pick up some broccoli, head over to Lee’s Instagram feed for a spell of delightful food art.
We, for one, can never again look at a piece of toast and not see Totoro in it.
