We’re all about trendsetting. From making Wednesdays wonderful for women with ladies’ nights and Thursdays thrilling with “almost-weekend” happy hours. You’d think these specials are all a restaurateur’s gimmick to ensure maximum footfalls even on working nights, but there’s more to it. There is indeed a method to the madness.
After a stressful week at work, Mumbai really doesn’t prefer to spend Saturday evenings stuck in traffic for a bar night with as many people as possible crowding the floor. And so, the city turned to Sundays for its dose of fun.
Sundays would start out with brunches, which would ironically start post 12 noon, instead of the customary 10 AM. But as winter (yes, we use the word ‘winter’ loosely) draws to a close – and here’s where the aforementioned method to madness comes in – and all efforts are on to avoid the afternoon heat, “Sunday Sundown” has become the latest buzzword.
House, R&B, Jazz and Latin music fill the air with what’s a typical celebratory, debauchery-filled weekend and as night falls, this is also where friends bemoan the week ahead. It’s almost like a sulk fest towards the end of the week (except maybe for those who’re expecting their appraisal letters or those closer to their holidays dates). But there’s a sense of bonhomie in being able to share the terrors of Mo(u)rning Mondays.
Rooftop bars are a clear favourite, making them perfect for a sundowner before the monsoon requires us all to run for cover.
The swish set makes its way to St. Regis’ Asilo, the highest rooftop bar in the city, followed closely by Aer at nearby Four Seasons. Escobar in Bandra is a really popular choice – who can resist the ease of ordering a cocktail across the 70+ ft long bar; Olive Bar & Kitchen, a few minutes drive from here, is the perfect spot to reminisce about that long-ago Greek holiday. If you’re more of a sangria person, we know just the place. For cerevisaphiles (read beer addicts), you’d best end your weekends at the city’s many microbreweries like Doollally, TAP (Andheri and Bandra), Brewbot or Pump Room for an outdoorsy soirée.
