Usually, I would never admit to watching Desperate Housewives on a forum this public; but they had some of the most well-written, engaging scripts. And while you heard of the stereotyped women who had pillow fights, chick flicks, make up sessions and tubs of ice cream, these women played poker, hid murders together and had the best ever ice cream floats. Watching those bourbon, Amaretto and Chardonnay floats was pure torture. The closest you got to it was a very disappointing Rum and Raisin ice cream, which never tasted as promising as it sounded.
Then, once upon a time in a land far away, “Will you walk into my parlour?” Said the ice cream to the booze. Now, perfectly innocent ice creams all over the world seem to be seducing something stronger on the sly. Ice cream was a tradition in the family of Melissa Tavss, founder of Tipsy Scoop, which is the most popular boozy ice cream in the United States. But at some point, much like the rest of us, she started experimenting with different spirits and liquors in her ice cream. The difference between her artisan’s hands and our lazy bowls full of generous pours, is that she’s damn good at it. These ice creams are handcrafted with combinations of flavours and spirits, which are so perfect that it feels like a love letter, a best friend’s hug, a party, a festival or even the beautiful weather in your mouth, depending on your choice. The recently gone by Halloween could still be celebrated with a Spiked Spiced Pumpkin Pie ice cream, for instance. A Frosé All Day would be the perfect date on the beach in summer. Then again, this year, you could actually surprise your friends on their birthdays with a Cake Batter Vodka Martini, instead of the traditional cake at midnight. Autumn calls for the Chocolate Stout and Salty Pretzel while Buttered Hot Rum will keep you snug on those cold, wintry nights. The Dark Chocolate Whiskey Salted Caramel is for when you’re feeling classy while the Tequila Mexican Hot Chocolate is for when you’re feeling sexy. Meanwhile, the Boozy Ice Cream Sandwich is simply to pack and take on picnic or camp and be (drunk) little kids again. Tipsy Scoop is available only to US citizens and we can hardly wait for it to come to India. Meanwhile, we have Mercer’s Dairy, also in New York, which prides itself on its Wine Ice Creams. Now, there’s an ice cream perfect for everything from date to heartbreak and from slumber parties to ‘me’ time. It delivers to 14 nations and India’s not one of them yet.
Now, now, before you begin to bawl and ask God why I am doing this to you, we, in Mumbai, have our very own artisans. Alok Rao, founder of Drunken Cream, is the one in Mumbai, who realized that ice cream and alcohol are a match made in heaven. Drunken Cream was born as the result of an accident. Alok got a little too generous with the whiskey he was adding to homemade cherry ice cream so it doesn’t crystallize. Once he tasted blood, there was no looking back and he has delighted us for nearly three years with his miraculous creations, no less tempting than those of Tipsy Scoop. After a short gap, Drunken Cream is now making a comeback very soon in Dombivli, from where they would deliver to doorsteps all over the city. Their ice cream is thoroughly handmade with no artificial flavouring or essence, which makes it all the more comforting. Rao is now adding to his menu with experiments on champagne, wine and cocktails like Margaritas and Pinacoladas. Watch out for flavours like Cherry Whisky, Chocolate with Crème de Menthe, Orange Brownie Grand Marnier, Chocolate Beer, Whiskey Almond, Coffee Oreo Rum and Blueberry Ginger.
Meanwhile, you could make the waiting easier on yourself by soothing that much tormented heart with Beer Popsicles at The White Owl, Chocolate Truffles with Homemade Whiskey Ice Cream at Gallops or the Jack Daniels Ice Cream at Bungalow 9. After all, it is pairs like alcohol and ice cream that make us believe in love stories and real fairy tales ending in happily ever after.
